How to Help With Grade 4 Times Tables

By Grade 4, times tables are no longer a side skill. They support multi-digit multiplication, long division, fractions, factors, and area. If recall is still slow, larger problems become exhausting even when the student understands the steps.
What your child is learning
Ontario Grade 4 students work toward fluent multiplication facts and apply them to larger numbers. A problem like 34 x 6 depends on both place value and basic facts: 30 x 6 plus 4 x 6. When the fact 4 x 6 is automatic, the student can focus on the structure of the problem.
Grade 4 is also where students often meet 11s, 12s, two-digit by one-digit multiplication, and early two-digit by two-digit problems. This is the right time to close gaps in 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s.
Three common sticking points
1. Slow recall of the middle facts
Example: 7 x 8 = 56 is often slower than 2s, 5s, or 10s. Practise a tiny deck of only missed facts for a week instead of reviewing all 144 facts every night.
2. Forgetting place value in two-digit multiplication
Example: for 34 x 6, the 3 means 30, not 3. Ask your child to say "30 times 6" before writing the partial product 180.
3. Knowing facts but missing word-problem units
Example: 8 boxes with 12 pencils each gives 96 pencils. The number is not complete until the answer is labelled. Have your child underline the question and write the unit beside the final answer.
How to practise
Separate fact fluency from longer multiplication. Do a short fact warmup first, then a small set of two-digit problems where your child shows partial products or the standard algorithm clearly.

How to check the work
Ask for an estimate before checking exact answers. If 34 x 6 is near 30 x 6, the answer should be near 180, not 1,804. Estimation catches place-value errors quickly.
