How to Help With Grade 8 Algebra

Published: July 2026

Grade 8 algebra prepares students for Grade 9 linear relations. Students simplify expressions with integers and brackets, solve two-step equations, and connect patterns to equations and graphs.

What your child is learning

In Ontario Grade 8, algebra is still Strand C, but the work becomes more formal. Students are expected to combine like terms, distribute through brackets, and solve equations with negative numbers or more than one operation.

A problem like 2(x + 5) - 3 = 17 asks for several habits at once: distribute, simplify, undo subtraction, undo multiplication, and check the solution. This is exactly the type of sequence students need for Grade 9 de-streamed math.

Three common sticking points

1. Sign errors with integers

Example: -3x + 5x is 2x, not -8x. Encourage your child to think of coefficients as signed numbers before combining terms.

2. Distributing a negative

Example: -2(x - 4) becomes -2x + 8. Both terms inside the brackets are multiplied by -2, including the sign on -4.

3. Skipping the check step

Example: if x = 6, substitute 6 into the original equation, not the simplified halfway line. This catches errors introduced during expanding or collecting terms.

How to practise

Alternate expression practice with equation practice. If your child cannot simplify 3x - 4 + 2x cleanly, solving equations that contain that expression will feel much harder than it should.

How to check the work

Parents often cannot verify Grade 8 algebra instantly, and that is normal. Use substitution for final equation answers, and use photo checking when the question has brackets or several simplifying steps.
