How to Help With Grade 6 Fractions

Published: July 2026

Grade 6 fractions ask students to use several skills together: simplifying, finding common denominators, converting mixed numbers, and finding a fraction of a number. The math is not only harder; it is more connected.

What your child is learning

In Ontario Grade 6, fraction work still belongs to Strand B, Number, but it now supports ratios, rates, percents, and algebraic thinking. A problem like 2 1/3 + 3/4 requires converting the mixed number, finding a common denominator, adding, and sometimes simplifying the result.

Students also meet real-world fraction problems. Finding 3/5 of 40 means divide by 5, then multiply by 3. This connects fractions to multiplication and division rather than treating them as isolated symbols.

Three common sticking points

1. Skipping the common denominator step

Example: 2/3 + 1/6 should become 4/6 + 1/6 = 5/6. If your child adds 2 + 1 and 3 + 6, pause and ask whether thirds and sixths are the same size pieces.

2. Losing the whole number in mixed numbers

Example: 2 1/3 is 7/3, not 3/3. The conversion is 2 x 3 + 1 over 3. Have your child write the multiplication step so the whole number is not dropped.

3. Forgetting to simplify final answers

Example: 8/12 is a correct sum but not a simplified answer. Ask for a common factor of 8 and 12. Dividing both by 4 gives 2/3.

How to practise

Use short mixed sets only after individual skills are steady. If your child cannot simplify reliably, unlike-denominator addition will be much harder. If mixed numbers are confusing, practise conversion on its own before returning to operations.

How to check the work

For fraction operations, checking only the final answer can miss the real issue. Look at the common denominator, conversion, and simplification steps. A photo check is useful when a worksheet has several linked fraction steps.
