How to Help With Grade 3 Times Tables
Published: July 2026
Grade 3 is when multiplication shifts from equal groups and arrays toward fact fluency. Students focus on recalling the 2s, 5s, and 10s while using arrays, skip counting, and equal groups to reason through other multiplication situations.
What your child is learning
Ontario Grade 3 students connect multiplication to repeated addition, skip counting, arrays, and equal groups. The goal is to know the 2, 5, and 10 fact families well enough that those facts do not consume all their attention when they later solve division, area, or fraction problems.
A strong Grade 3 routine combines meaning and memory. Arrays show why 2 x 6 and 6 x 2 have the same product. Skip counting helps students reach facts they do not know yet. Then short daily recall practice makes the required 2s, 5s, and 10s automatic.
Three common sticking points
1. Reciting in order but freezing out of order
Example: a child can say 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, but cannot answer 5 x 6 quickly. Once the sequence is known, switch to mixed-order questions so recall is attached to the fact, not only to the chant.
2. Skipping the array model too soon
Example: for 2 x 6, draw 2 rows of 6 and then rotate the array to show 6 x 2. This helps students understand multiplication as equal groups instead of treating facts as isolated answers.
3. Missing the fact-family connection
Example: if 5 x 6 = 30, then 30 divided by 5 = 6. Say the connected division fact after multiplication practice so facts do not feel like separate lists later.
How to practise
Keep practice short: five to ten minutes daily is enough. Rotate one table at a time, then mix two or three tables together. When a fact is missed, ask for a strategy before giving the answer.

How to check the work
For fact practice, ask your child to explain a missed fact using a model or nearby known fact: 10 x 6 can be double 5 x 6. For a full worksheet, photo checking helps identify whether the issue is recall, word-problem setup, or careless copying.
