How to Help With Grade 9 Linear Relations
Published: July 2026
Grade 9 linear relations bring together algebra, graphing, tables, and real-world rates. Students learn to describe straight-line patterns using equations, slope, intercepts, and graphs.
What your child is learning
In Ontario MTH1W, linear relations are part of the algebra strand. Students calculate slope as rate of change, graph equations, write rules in slope-intercept form, and solve linear equations that support modelling questions.
The key connection is that one relationship can be shown several ways. A table, a graph, a sentence, and an equation such as y = 3x + 5 can all describe the same pattern. Students need to move between those forms without losing the meaning of the numbers.
Three common sticking points
1. Mixing up rise and run
Example: from (2, 5) to (6, 17), the rise is 12 and the run is 4, so the slope is 3. If a student reverses the subtraction order for one coordinate but not the other, the sign or value will be wrong.
2. Reading y = mx + b without meaning
Example: in y = 4x + 10, the slope is 4 and the y-intercept is 10. In context, that might mean 10 dollars to start plus 4 dollars per item. Ask what m and b mean, not only what they are.
3. Graphing with an inconsistent scale
A correct table can still produce a bad graph if the axes are uneven or points are plotted between tick marks incorrectly. Check the scale before checking the equation.
How to practise
Rotate representations. One day, calculate slope from two points. Another day, graph from an equation. Then ask your teen to write a story or equation from a table. The goal is flexibility, not just repeating one procedure.

How to check the work
For slope, compare the rise-over-run setup before checking the final number. For equations, substitute a point from the table or graph into the equation. For a full page, photo checking is usually faster than redoing every graph by hand.
