Kindergarten geometry starts with noticing and naming two-dimensional shapes in the world around us: circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Children sort shapes by their attributes, such as number of sides or corners, and describe shapes using their own words before learning formal vocabulary.
Students also begin exploring position and direction, using words like above, below, beside, and between to describe where objects are located relative to one another. Simple three-dimensional objects, like balls, boxes, and cans, are introduced by their everyday names, and children practise matching these shapes to objects found in the classroom and at home.
