Long Division Checker

Check a quotient and remainder by rebuilding the dividend from the divisor.

Example: 157 divided by 12 = 13 R 1

How this checker works

Long division answers are easy to verify without redoing the entire problem. The rule is divisor times quotient plus remainder must equal the original dividend. This checker uses that rule and also checks that the remainder is valid. A remainder should be zero or positive, and it must be smaller than the divisor. If the remainder is too large, the quotient can usually go up one more.

Enter the dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder from the student work. The checker recomposes the division problem and shows the arithmetic it used. A correct answer will rebuild the dividend exactly. An incorrect answer will show the expected quotient and remainder, which gives a quick target for correction. This is useful after paper practice because it checks the final result fast while still encouraging students to keep their long-division work organized.
